Auroville Electrical Service was initially started by Mr. Toine Van Megan in the year 1972 with 6 Employees (All Indians) and later was taken over by Mr. Manou in the year 1984 and then by Mr. Ponnusamy in the year 1991 to look after all the Electrical needs of Auroville and Aurovillians. They are looking after TNEB Liasioning work for New Service connection, Line extension, Line Deviation, Transformer upgradation work etc. And also they are doing Internal and External Electrical work.
Presently AV Electrical Service is covering almost entire Auroville areas, now have approximately 800 Service connections in the name of Electrical Executive, Auroville, which includes agricultural service connections too (free of Electricity charges).
While a substantial number of Auroville residences and other buildings use solar-power-generated electricity, still a majority of buildings are connected to the mains grid. The latter supply can be erratic, however, with frequent power cuts, specially in summer. Voltage is officially set at 220v but often falls below that level; it can also occasionally surge higher. All Auroville’s main electricity supply needs and maintenance requirements are monitored and coordinated by the AV Electrical Service (AVES). Currently, the necessary electricity, even if through the mains grid, is supplied for free to all residential units by wind-generated power.
